It is based on the 1997 novel, The Moon and the Sun, by Vonda N. McIntyre, about the real Louis XIV and his fictional Mermaid (or not). Pierce Brosnan's cruel and charismatic king, who is the longest-serving king on the throne, gives it a human and merciless air, a simple and delightful drama that portrays a historical period in a magical and adorable way, with beautiful, suffering and determined princesses (dark times to be born a woman), a whimsical but novelistic production, a Disneyland-style ending, cute... King Louis XIV's quest for immortality leads him to capture and steal the life force of a mermaid, a move that becomes even more complicated by the discovery of his illegitimate daughter from the creature.
